Challenging Misleading Language: A Call for Clarity and Courage in Minnesota

Dear Minnesotans,

Words shape our understanding and influence our actions. When they are used in ways that obscure truth or promote division, we have a responsibility to engage thoughtfully and courageously. Let’s challenge intellectually inconsistent or misleading language with kindness and clarity to foster honest dialogue.

Here are a few examples:

  1. “Gun Violence”: When you hear this term, point out that guns are inanimate objects and cannot act independently. Violence stems from human choices and actions. Reframe the discussion to focus on root causes like mental health, crime, or cultural factors, and ask for solutions that address those issues directly.
  2. “Reproductive Freedom”: When this phrase is used to advocate for abortion, respectfully ask how it aligns with reproduction, which inherently involves creating life. Encourage a deeper conversation about the ethical complexities of abortion, balancing individual autonomy with the value of life, to move beyond slogans to meaningful discussion.
  3. “Fighting for the Marginalized”: If someone claims to champion marginalized groups while their rhetoric dehumanizes or vilifies others (e.g., based on race, religion, or political views), highlight the contradiction. True advocacy uplifts without tearing others down. Ask how their approach promotes unity rather than further division.

We cannot allow vague or manipulative language to shape our communities unchallenged. By engaging with wisdom, empathy, and clarity, we can counter misinformation and foster conversations that lead to understanding and solutions. Let’s commit to speaking truth with courage, not to silence others, but to invite them into a dialogue rooted in reason and respect.

Respectfully,

Phillip C. Parrish

Candidate for Governor of Minnesota 2026
