Digital Bandits: The Sluggards of the Screen

How Online Parasites Steal from Society—and How We Starve Them Out

By Phillip C. Parrish, Candidate for Governor of Minnesota

From Minnesota farms to Iron Range factories, we Producers build the goods, services, and communities that sustain our state. Yet in digital shadows, the Digital Bandit thrives—keyboard sluggards in luxury condos, profiting from fear and lies while producing nothing. “The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth” (Proverbs 26:15).

These opportunists pledge no loyalty—to party, race, creed, or conscience. They exploit every vulnerability, every platform, every election cycle to siphon wealth and influence. As 2026 approaches, their grip tightens: blinding voters, sowing panic, rigging outcomes. But we can expose, refuse, and overcome them.

1. The Fiefdom: Theft by Algorithm

Why produce when panic pays? Platforms are neutral tools; ill intent corrupts them. Algorithms reward emotion—fear, outrage, hope. Bandits craft viral hooks: half-truths, exaggerated threats, feel-good scams. A 2025 ABC News probe found one TikTok “finfluencer” earning $500,000 yearly by preying on retirees’ inflation fears—delivering vaporware apps that crash overnight.

Phantom surveys arrive cloaked as “voter polls,” harvesting preferences and districts. Your concern about fraud? Sold to PACs. Your hope for schools? Fodder for fear campaigns. No party is immune. “Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys” (Proverbs 18:9).

2. Manipulation Mastery: Blinding the Masses

Bandits weaponize our frailties—belonging, dread, trust. Algorithms curate echo chambers; a single post spirals into conspiracy threads laced with sponsored links. In 2024, super PACs spent $1.2 billion on micro-targeted ads (Brennan Center), tailoring fear to your zip code. A Duluth miner sees “job-killing mandates”; a Minneapolis teacher gets “indoctrination” hysteria—all to suppress turnout.

Yet not every alarm is false. Many “outrageous” narratives carry threads of truth—$250 million stolen from child nutrition, northern border strains, state contract waste. Bandits don’t invent problems; they exploit them, twisting legitimate concerns into fundraising rackets. “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1).

3. The Human Toll: Stealing Peace, Eroding Trust

Dopamine hits from “likes” mimic addiction. A Rochester mom shares a false “school safety alert”; her network floods with gun-buying ads—profiting the bandit, fracturing trust. The cycle: fear breeds isolation, isolation breeds echo chambers, chambers birth more bandits. In 2025, ADL’s Misinformation Trends report showed TikTok challenges morphing into harassment campaigns, driving offline division.

4. The Antidote: Expose, Refuse, Produce

“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise” (Proverbs 6:6).

Expose: Trace sources with WHOIS, FactCheck.org. Honor the truth-thread; reject the toxin. Host community “truth huddles.”

Refuse: Curate feeds with verified voices. Mute rage farmers. Reject fear purchases. Build offline bonds.

Produce: Create content that builds—videos of Minnesota makers, voter guides. Teach media literacy. Ban foreign ad buys. Reward whistleblowers.

The 2025 Black Hat MEA conference showed AI detectors slashing false content by 70%. We can do the same.

Winning 2026: From Victims to Victors

These bandits lounge in fiefdoms of likes and loot, blind to the ants marching. We Producers are the diligent who “will rule” (Proverbs 12:24). In 2026, we vet, verify, vanquish lies.

I’ve traced the dollars, exposed the fraud. Now I call you to the front lines: one shared truth, one refused click, one bold vote. “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter” (Proverbs 24:11).

The feast ends when we stop serving. Who’s with me?
