Dear Minnesotans,
In the wake of recent tragedies like the heartbreaking incident at Annunciation Catholic School, I’ve been reflecting on how Minnesota’s systems often exacerbate harm rather than prevent it. My recent article, “Facing the Truth: Minnesota’s Leaders Exploit Tragedy to Perpetuate Harm—It’s Time for Real Change,” called out the need to address root causes such as childhood trauma, mental health crises, and ideological pressures that distort young lives. Today, I want to shine a light on a quieter, yet equally devastating, epidemic: the hidden battles families face when one parent’s activism or beliefs lead to neglect, coercion, and lasting damage to children. These stories aren’t isolated—they’re symptoms of a broken system that prioritizes ideology over child welfare.
Consider the plight of a devoted Minnesota father, fighting tooth and nail to shield his young teenage son from a co-parent’s influence. This parent, deeply involved in advocacy circles, has allegedly imposed pressures on the child to explore identity issues that the boy himself rejects, leading to confusion, anxiety, and even thoughts of self-harm. Compounding this are instances of outright neglect: medical conditions ignored until they caused permanent impairment, exposure to inappropriate adult content, and severe physical mishaps dismissed as inconsequential. When the father sought help—through therapists, legal counsel, and even protective orders—the response was disheartening. Professionals brushed off evidence of harm, courts denied relief citing costs or lack of precedent, and records omitted key details that could have flagged the risks early.
This isn’t just one family’s ordeal; it’s a pattern I’ve heard echoed in messages from parents across the state. Children caught in high-conflict divorces or custody disputes often become pawns in larger ideological wars. Social pressures from family members or online communities can mimic the dynamics of cults—subtle coercion dressed as “affirmation,” pushing vulnerable kids toward paths that amplify their distress rather than resolve it. In this case, the boy’s suicidal ideation at such a tender age went unaddressed until the father uncovered it himself, highlighting how environmental factors like family dynamics and external influences are too often overlooked in therapy and court proceedings.
Why does this happen? Minnesota’s family courts and mental health services are overburdened and underfunded, often failing to incorporate tools like Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) screening that could identify trauma early. Ideological biases creep in, where “progressive” policies protect adults’ expressions at the expense of children’s safety. Neglect—whether emotional, medical, or physical—slips through the cracks because the system lacks the teeth to intervene without ironclad proof, leaving parents like this father to navigate a maze of bureaucracy alone. Add personal setbacks, like unexpected legal troubles or career decisions derailed by family crises, and the toll becomes unbearable.
These struggles underscore a fundamental truth: Harm perpetuated in the name of ideology isn’t liberation—it’s exploitation. As I outlined in “Facing the Truth,” we must shift focus from divisive politics to proven solutions. Universal ACEs screening in schools and healthcare settings could catch these issues before they escalate. Expanded mental health resources, including trauma-informed therapy free from ideological agendas, would provide real support. Reforms to family courts—ensuring judges and attorneys prioritize evidence of neglect over procedural hurdles—could empower protective parents.
As your next Governor, I’ll champion these changes to protect all Minnesota families. No child should suffer permanent harm because a system values adult agendas over their well-being. We’ll invest in community supports, like faith-based groups and local networks, that offer genuine lifelines during crises. And we’ll hold accountable those who exploit tragedy or vulnerability for political gain.
If you’re a parent facing similar battles, know you’re not alone. Reach out—share your story anonymously if needed—and join the fight for real change. Together, we can build a Minnesota where every child is safe, heard, and healed.
