The Gaslighting of Free Speech: Unmasking the True Threat to Our Voices

By Phillip C. Parrish, Candidate for Governor of Minnesota 2026

As a child of God, husband, father, farmer, teacher, principal, administrator, and retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander with nearly 22 years of service, I’ve dedicated my life to serving others and defending the principles that make America great. As a candidate for Governor of Minnesota in 2026, I’m running to restore truth, transparency, and the will of the people to our state. Today, I address a critical issue: the gaslighting surrounding free speech, where those who claim to protect it are often the ones undermining it.

The narrative we’ve been fed for years—that certain voices must be amplified to “protect” free speech while others are silenced for the “greater good”—is a deliberate distortion. The real threat to free speech comes from those who have used their platforms, influence, and funding to control the public square, drowning out dissenting voices while accusing their critics of censorship. This gaslighting must end, and Minnesotans deserve to know the truth.

The Illusion of Free Speech Advocacy

For too long, powerful entities—media outlets, corporate interests, and political operatives—have shaped narratives under the guise of defending free speech. Late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, for example, often frame their critiques of public figures or policies as bold exercises of free expression. Yet, when they selectively amplify certain viewpoints while ignoring or ridiculing others, they aren’t championing free speech—they’re curating it. This curation, driven by corporate sponsors and network priorities, creates a lopsided public discourse that marginalizes everyday Minnesotans.

Consider the financial underpinnings. In 2021, pharmaceutical companies alone spent over $6 billion on television advertising, a significant portion of which funds networks like ABC, Kimmel’s employer [Source: Statista, 2022]. This revenue stream can subtly pressure media outlets to align content with the interests of their benefactors, sidelining voices that challenge those interests. The result? A public square where only approved narratives thrive, while dissenting opinions—whether about health policy, education, or cultural issues—are dismissed as misinformation or extremism.

This isn’t free speech; it’s a pay-to-play system. As I’ve traveled Minnesota, from Blue Earth to the North Shore, I’ve heard from farmers, teachers, and small business owners who feel their voices are drowned out by this orchestrated noise. They’re not alone. A 2018 Pew Research Center study found that 90% of Americans believe the media is biased toward specific political or corporate agendas [Source: Pew Research Center, 2018]. The gaslighting lies in the claim that this controlled narrative is “free speech” at work.

The Funding Behind the Facade

The erosion of free speech has often been propped up by questionable funding sources. Between 2008 and 2016, dark money groups poured billions into shaping political and cultural narratives, often without transparency [Source: OpenSecrets.org, Dark Money Reports]. These funds amplified voices that aligned with elite interests, creating the illusion of widespread support for divisive or unpopular agendas. For example, a 2016 investigation by The Intercept revealed how foreign entities, including Saudi Arabia, indirectly funded U.S. media and think tanks to influence public opinion on foreign policy [Source: The Intercept, 2016]. This isn’t speculation—it’s documented.

As these funding streams dry up, whether due to public scrutiny or shifting priorities, the artificial prominence of certain voices is fading. On X, users like @MNGrower2025 have noted, “The truth is breaking through now that the money propping up fake narratives is running out. Minnesotans are done with the manufactured outrage.” This shift is empowering everyday citizens to reclaim their voices, proving that the “majority” support for certain agendas was never as strong as portrayed.

The Real Threat: Silencing Through Accusation

The most insidious tactic of those undermining free speech is accusing their critics of doing so. By labeling dissent as “dangerous” or “divisive,” they justify censorship while posing as its victims. We’ve seen this in Minnesota and beyond. For instance, during debates over education policy, parents voicing concerns about curriculum have been branded as threats to public discourse, yet their right to speak at school board meetings is curtailed. This is the gaslighting: silencing people while claiming to protect their rights.

As a Navy veteran, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of open dialogue in a free society. In Minnesota, we must reject this hypocrisy. Those who control the microphone—whether through media platforms or political influence—have too often used it to suppress, not liberate. My campaign is about restoring the people’s voice, ensuring that every Minnesotan, from the Iron Range to the Twin Cities, can speak freely without fear of being labeled or silenced.

A Path Forward for Minnesota

As your candidate for Governor in 2026, I pledge to protect true free speech by dismantling the systems that enable this gaslighting. My plan includes:

1. Transparency in Media Funding: Advocate for laws requiring media outlets to disclose major funding sources, so Minnesotans know who’s shaping the narrative.

2. Protecting Public Discourse: Support policies that ensure equal access to public forums, from school boards to town halls, so no voice is silenced.

3. Empowering Local Voices: Use my platform to amplify the concerns of everyday Minnesotans, not corporate or elite agendas.

4. Strengthening Accountability: Push for independent audits of government and media practices to expose and eliminate undue influence.

Minnesotans, the truth is on our side. The gaslighters who claim to defend free speech while stifling it are losing their grip. As I’ve said throughout my campaign, this isn’t about left versus right—it’s about right versus wrong. Together, we’ll ensure that free speech is truly free—for all of us.
